My journey (so far)
I have a background in cancer research, and it's always been my passion. I studied biology in Portugal during my undergrad, with the intention of pursuing cancer research. The complexity of the biological problem was fascinating to me, and I wanted to contribute to finding new solutions to this clinical problem. We all have people in our lives suffering from this disease and I wanted to be a part of the solution.
I completed my PhD in cancer biology at the University of Cambridge in the UK, and from the start of my research career, I was interested in the tumour microenvironment. This includes everything that supports the tumour, such as the vasculature, fibroblasts, and extracellular matrix, as well as components of the immune system. I believe that understanding the tumour microenvironment is crucial in finding new ways to combat cancer.
I did a postdoc in Houston at the MD Anderson Cancer Center for a few years, where I focused on studying different components of the microenvironment. This area of research began to gain more attention as immunotherapy became a blockbuster and changed everything. The concept of harnessing an immune response against cancer was a breakthrough in cancer research in the past decade. As I progressed in my career, I realised that although I always wanted to do basic research, I was becoming frustrated with the academic cycle of working towards the next publication and grant. I wanted to break out of this cycle and explore other avenues in cancer research.
